Working for hours to not see the result you wanted is frustrating; So is binge eating when you had done so well on your diet for the past week; Or even when you’re trying to learn a new skill and no matter how much you practice, you don’t seem to be getting any better! I could go on about all the things that make me feel frustrated and defeated, trust me, I get it. Luckily over the years, I’ve learned a few things that help me get through the times I just want to quit. I’ll be sharing those with you in this blog post so let’s get into it!
We always hear about how great it is to make your bed every morning and I know I know it sounds like bull s*** but they may have been on to something! A few days ago I was lounging around my house after eating cake and a whole bunch of chocolate and of course feeling guilty for it. While I was stuck in my defeat, I decided to clean my house. I started with the living room, and then cleaned my bathroom. This might seem super lame and you’re right, it is. But I did end up with a feeling of accomplishment after I had turned my grimey bathroom with two bath towels and a full garbage bin into a sparkling beaut! It in turn inspired me to clean other parts of my house and do all sorts of other things I was putting off because I already did one thing. I wanted to hold on to that momentum and feeling of accomplishment! Next time you’re feeling stuck and frustrated, tidy up your space. See if that makes you feel any better, or at least a little more ready to dive back into your project! At the very least it’ll provide a little distraction from whatever’s got you frustrated and defeated!
Take a shower
This may or may not be inspired by the shower I took right after cleaning my bathroom (I also did a facemask and started back up with my skincare I’d been neglecting). When I’ve been studying for finals or working on a project for hours and it’s the middle of the night and I feel like I can’t do anymore, I go and take a quick shower. I’m not quite sure why but I usually come out of it feeling ready to get back into it and always feel more awake and energized! I know this isn’t always a viable option since you’re of course not always going to have a shower available but I think if You tweak this to washing or rinsing your face, it still applies. Try it next time you’re falling asleep at your desk!
This could be something as simple as just stretching at your desk or just going for a walk to clear your mind or even kickboxing for half an hour. I think it varies based on what level of “done” you are and how much time you have. Ultimately, it provides a great distraction and much like tidying up, gives you a sense of accomplishment. Next time you’re really frustrated, see if you can find space to do a quick workout and see how you feel afterward.
When all else fails: sleep it off
I understand that this may not be an option for everyone because of time commitments but if you can, find a relaxing podcast or soundscape, relax, and worry about it tomorrow. Your work will (probably) still be there and there’s no sense in sitting at your desk doing nothing and getting frustrated for hours more. Just be sure to wake up early to catch up on any work you left behind. You may be able to look at it a different way or see something you missed while stressing. I recommend waking up, showering, have some tea, a healthy breakfast, and get to work!
